External Hard Drives

What does everyone like for External Hard Drives? I'm wanting something basic to to back up docs, images, and home videos. It would be used on both a Mac and a PC.
Would you go with a wireless solution that backs up automatically or something that needs to be hard-wired into the machine to complete a backup. Whatever I get would stay at home and traveling with me would be unnecessary. Is solid state worth it? Only needing something basic. Any brands to avoid?
Thanks in advance

Just get Dropbox or something. It's cheap and can be accessed anywhere.

Have you considered a NAS? Access from all devices at home and you can set backups to be saved to network location. Some NAS's have an internet connection app that allows you to get to it from anywhere with internet. Just suggested NAS because you mentioned important data/files and backups...lowers impact of hardware failure...
