Sounds like it's time for a new dog.
My wife left the doggy door open and at 3:30 in the morning an animal came in. I don't know what it was because my dog immediately jumped up and took off after it the moment the flap made a sound.

My dog will bark but it's only if it's a door opening and such. We were camping one night and a dog ran up on us and he had a real deep growl and then started barking. I opened the tent and he took off after it.
He also chaced a deer that morning. He froze Herodes hand though.

I've always wondered how often that happens. I'd hate to get up in the middle of the night and happen upon a Opossum or coon. Both would gladly bite if frightened.
