Left alone on an island, my guess is that children would eventually notice differences in each other and probably separate into groups over time. Not necessarily based on skin color, although that isn't outside the realm of possibility. Is that racism, or the human condition?

I disagree. When the emphasis is placed on the common elements of the human condition that we all share instead of our differences, the human race will finally make huge strides in race relations. Political correctness and the balkanization of humanity need to go the way of the dinosaur. Until it does, we will never solve our racial or social problems.
