Mostly due to Aranda.
Some of it can be attributed to Dave Aranda's scheme of disguising/hiding blitzers, but Wisconsin's LB's are very good.
When Aranda was at Wisconsin, he coached the Inside Linebackers. Tim Tibesar was/is in-charge of the Outside Linebackers.
Players like Vince Biegel, a top-three player at his position in HS, likely excels no matter who the coach is. He is the top-returning 3-4 OLB in the country, according to PFF.
Wisconsin has always been strong in the middle over the last decade having players like Chris Borland (2x All-American, 3x All Big ten), Mike Taylor (2x All Big Ten), and DeAndre Levy (2x All Big Ten).
I've said it multiple times that I expect Wisconsin to take a step back on defense with Aranda now at LSU, but you would think that Wisconsin's defense will have trouble walking after reading some of these topics.
Expectations will be there when you return three of four LB's and have a player that won Defensive MVP in the Holiday, whom may not even start.

And that is a quote directly from a Wisconsin fan

I don't see LSU running away by any stretch. We aren't starting a new defense against South Carolina State. New defense, new assignments will take some time to jell. The only real change on offense is Harris with one more year and we don't even know if that will mean improvement yet. For all we know it will be nothing different or improved on offense until we see if Les let's Cameron do his job without the interference.
