There will only be 24 teams in 2018, assuming Miami can get a stadium. The league went 14 years without a single team in the southeast, and even before and since then the teams have only been in Florida. Hell, next year will be the first time there has been a team within 450 miles from me, and this is an area where you can play year round. The league has alienated an entire region that loves sports.

The comish has already said they are looking at getting to 28-30 teams. Problem is where are the players going to come from. Only way for that to work and keep the standard of play were it is at or improve is that the quality of home grown players increases very quickly.

When the MLS first started the quality was actually pretty decent bc we had less teams and some rosters were loaded.

You cannot have a viable league with this reality. You have to reach people. MLS recognized this issue and correctly knew it had to expand. Of course there will be short term dilution of quality but that can be assuaged with Latin players to some degree. The long term benefits will be extraordinary for quality, not just in terms of the league but moreover in terms of America in general. MLS academies are becoming real, bona fide structures of development and they will definitely play a leading role in the revolution of talented young American players. The depth of quality will be significantly enhanced.
