I honestly thought it said 2014 not 2004. I would imagine that the ~1600 not identified were never recovered. While all of them may be shotguns/rifles that seems unlikely given that roughly 10x more homicides are committed by handguns vs shotguns/rifles. 1,700 knife deaths 700 shotgun/rifle deaths, even if the trend was completely bucked and half of the unidentified were shotguns/rifles then there would still be 200+ more knife deaths.

Well according to that .gov website, in 2010 there were 1,732 murders committed with knives and other cutting instruments.

And 826 committed by non-handgun guns.
