thanks just saw the developer document Boring Technical Details It's interesting that Apple thought that HFS+ was too limiting that they developed totally new file framework. I suppose it's like how they thought objective-C was too complicated and error-prone (and rightfully so) replacing it with a totally new language.

No data integrity in HFS+. It was designed for HDD and no SSDs. And many other reasons that I have no clue about.

Edit:
quote:

Apple: HFS+ and its predecessor HFS are more than 30 years old. These file systems were developed in an era of floppy disks and spinning hard drives, where file sizes were calculated in kilobytes or megabytes. Today, solid-state drives store millions of files, accounting for gigabytes or terabytes of data. There is now also a greater importance placed on keeping sensitive information secure and safe from prying eyes. A new file system is needed to meet the current needs of Apple products, and support new technologies for decades to come.

Mossberg's Live Stream on The Verge made a great point: Between the FCC's decision to decouple Cable content from set top boxes and the single sign on (which was glossed over but is a pretty huge deal), Apple is very, very close to being a sort've massive cable company as of the moment iOS 10 and tvOS ship.

I was listening to Ctrl-Walt-Delete with Walt and Nilay positing that Apple may sell Bundles of TV apps and then there being some sort of guide interface to tie it together.

So Apple has opened its keyboard, messaging, maps, Siri, photos and HomeKit apps to Devs. It will allow subscriptions in News and there's also a new revenue split amongst subscription-based apps that give Devs a bigger slice of the pie, especially after a year of continuous payment by the user.

I notice no Android users here on the "closed ecosystem is bad," bandwagon. Perhaps because between I/O and WWDC these events are more iterative and less shock and awe as the mobile space has matured to an extent.

But it's impossible to deny Apple become more Android-like with this move to open up more and more of its formerly tightly controlled aspects of the iOS, while Android is using Project Fi and Nexus to become more and more Apple-like in terms of controlling the OS/UI and UX for its customers.

They're both moving to the middle. It's like Republican vs. Democrats, only they realize that true success is actually going to be a race to the middle, LOL.

Siri leveraging what it knows about you to suggest things you want to watch; from trending live content to your favorite reruns would be awesome. Be it an LSU Football game, breaking news stories, political speeches, newest Game of Thrones episode, or an old The Office or Seinfeld episode. Having to inherently know what is on at any given moment (especially without a TV guide), what app is supplying the content, and then having to drill down in that app to find it is a very cumbersome task.

Question: With Apple going out of its way to emphasize that the machine learning "only on your device," and focus on "differential privacy," to help it compete against options like Google & Amazon while still maintaining privacy, I'm curious about just how much they'll be able to leverage these things.

Will Siri on my iPhone collaborate with Siri on my Apple TV and Siri on my Apple iPad Mini? Or will each of those learn independently? Seems like what they're talking about but it also seems like a hugely ineffective method to not tie them all together and leverage each other to achieve a more coherent Siri experience.

They covered so much at WWDC that a ton of stuff got glossed over in an effort to cover it all. I'm interested in that aspect of how things will progress with Siri perhaps more than anything else discussed.

I believe Craig said as much machine learning on device as possible, but they're still doing a lot server side.

I wouldn't hold your breath. I'm pretty sure the Siri API does not include tvOS, which is why there is a dedicated siri button on the Apple TV remote app instead of just holding the home button down. On the other hand, all Siri queries are tied to your Apple ID, so I don't see why this wouldn't be possible. Maybe next year?
