Currently talking to a former member of TGBFTL, and he sees some truth to the safety angle, saying there's so much shite on the sidelines anyways and all the bands hanging out there before and after halftime just make it worse. I'm sure someone mentioned some liability issue with having everyone crammed down there and someone finally decided to do something.
But he also thinks that it could be that no one really cares about the visiting band performing. It was never a big deal to him or the rest of the band to play at opposing stadiums. Just didn't care.
I mean, there isn't a ton of room between the endzone and the stands, is there?
