I have used an Osprey Farpoint 55 since 2013. For most jets, it fits and I've not had any problems on international carriers.
If I'm on a small regional CJ jet or something, it has to be gate checked, but so does just about everybody's bag.
I can fit a lot of crap in there, a pair of shoes, flip flops, couple pairs of pants, shorts, shirts, undies, socks, two snorkel sets, etc. Pretty much about 7 to 10 days worth of clothes.
That's not counting the day back that zips off which I put my camera and other valuables in.
