A large part of this series is prophecy and fate. Martin has said that he likes the idea of prophecy showing up in unexpected ways. You think that prophecy says one thing, but it is really much more subtle than that. Like say you are prophesied to die on a boat, but you really die in an inn named after a boat. You try to avoid boats, but your avoidance just pushes you towards your fate. The Hodor/hold the door thing is an example of this. Kind of clever, and I really liked it.

Bran is prophesied for great things. Making the mistake of being touched by the Night King is part of his fate, and it will push him towards the next place that he needs to be.
