I employ people in one of the most disadvantaged areas of the US (southern Missouri Ozarks). Our starting pay is $8.50 for manual labor. If you actually show up to work, don't get high on the job, and put in at least some effort, we take you to $10 within 6 months. (or we fire you).
Most of our guys make about $12. That's the minimum wage for being able to have the basics like a small rental house and a car that runs. And that's assuming a two-income household, or a single guy with no kids.

At least he's working and not on the fricking government paycheck, another life lesson is never make fun of those less fortunate, everyone has a place in this world.
