In addition to his guitar sound largely defining the Heartbreakers (along with Petty's voice and Lynch's drums) - Campbell was wildly prolific on other folks' albums, similar to Waddy Wachtel showing up on everybody's record. Basically, for about 10 or 15 years, if Waddy didn't play the guitar for one of "those" (mainstream, high volume rock) acts, good chance that Campbell did.
