I have a buddy that does the same. He's very well traveled and always finds himself going back to Peru solo. I think that alone speaks volumes. I've only been once, I would like to go back, just gotta find the time. The hostels there are mostly well kept, and the travelers are all super open and friendly. You're friend is correct, Americans have some sort of allure to the local women, who are extremely attractive I might add. They are kind of hit or miss, though. I found myself in a few "scary" moments, and all of it had to do with nothing other than culture shock. It's amazing the first time you find yourself in a small town in what is basically a new world to you. It's scary, exciting, surreal. You feel like you're living your own movie. This feeling dies down a little, but it's still there, just not as strong. Kind of like a drug, I guess. haha
