If I'm flying somewhere for a quick weekend and have 1 personal item, spirit is great. Usually take it from MSY to DFW.

Depends on the type of person you are. If all you care about is price, yes, worth it. Pack light, just take a carry on and pay for it before you get to the airport.
If you are, however, a creature of comfort, dont take spirit. Very limited leg room, seats do not recline, awful demographic of people on the plane. Its a completely different company that caters to non-business low(er) income travelers. If you do decide to go with them, tack on 70 bucks round trip and just get the "big seat" you wont regret it. If you dont do that immediately go up to the counter when you get to your gate and tell them you'd like to volunteer for an exit row seat.
