The signing period doesn't end until April, plus he doesn't have to sign at all

That's just the first day when they can sign LOIs (well except for the JUCO NSD). They have until April 1st, where they can make their decision.
The #1 ATH Demetrius Robinson is still deciding and could take it all the way up to the deadline.

You take a chance on doing this that the school will either fill or lose interest. If you are good enough and there are spots left, then it works out.

Picking a school is a pretty big deal and probably the most important decision these 18 year old kids have made their whole life. Honestly I don't think 90% of kids should sign on singing day. But Martin originally planned on making hisn decision shortly after, but I believe his mother got sick and he wants her to be there when he makes his decision.
