I've been doing this since there was no such thing as a project manager. The Superintendent ran the job and normally handled most everything except estimating and change orders. And the schedule was kept on a big USG or Owens-Corning or whatever other calendar the salesman left in the jobshack.

And the architect could actually draw and provide detailed documents and usable specifications and everyone involved had at least swung a hammer or owned a tape measure.

It is all disposable today, architecture, construction and yes personnel.
