I'm aware, but if the self destruct feature can be removed on an existing phone already, then doesn't a flaw already exist?

ETA: Apple should clarify if they're saying they will not help the FBI find a backdoor to the auto-erase feature OR if a backdoor to the auto-erase feature does not exist in the first place.

If it is the latter, no big deal. If it is the former, then that is a problem IMO.

anything can be done when you own the source code. doesnt mean its a good idea
