Ah, that makes sense. Bethel is a regional hub for all the Y-K Delta villages. Subsistence rights are a hot issue with the natives.
To earn their respect, be sure to eat fermented beaver tail or seal flipper. Or stink heads. They consider it a slight if you turn them down. Always respect the elders, they're the key to gaining acceptance with the rest of them. Overall they are good people, particularly the elders. They have some amazing stories to tell.
