#1 rule of weapons safety, assume the gun is ALWAYS LOADED until YOU personally check and clear it.

#2 rule - NEVER have the barrel pointed at something you arent willing to DESTROY

This is pretty simple to remember and apply.

So basically, even if the gun was fully loaded, it should of never been pointed at someone or laid out in the open in such a way where it could be pointed at someone. Only way it could of happened is if it dropped somehow and fired, because otherwise the gun should of never been pointed at the wife or allowed to be pointed at her. Loaded or not.

Then considering it was a cop, who should know these rules and practice it daily since he more than likely carries his gun every day
