I originally tried the 64 bit but it said something like "your CPU is __x__ and needed to be _____. I'll try it again in a bit and give that exact message.

Yeah, I did tell it Ubuntu when starting VB.

And I downloaded the file directly from Ubuntus website in the 'downloads' section. But if it does have to be from disc/USB I don't get why the version 12 would work but not the newer ones?

Thanks to y'all helping/offering solutions. I have clicked on literally dozens of links trying to find a work around or something but just cant figure it out.

There are more options. One is to install Ubuntu as a secondary OS, and to boot it up when turning on the computer instead of windows.

Also, there are several free versions of VM software available from other companies. Windows is even doing a free trial of Hyper-V, and I think it lasts a few montbs. Would

Simple thing but needs to be said -- did you check the md5 (or whatever Ubuntu uses for a signature) on the download? It's possible to get an almost but not quite perfect file that almost but doesn't quite work for installation.
