Free throws aren't guaranteed. That is why we are having this discussion. They aren't guaranteed to make the shots, so the other team has a chance to get the ball with no point loss. If you just keep giving the other team possession, that gives them an unfair advantage over and over and over again. That makes every single foul in the game irrelevant and therefore pointless to call them.
