Could you imagine Bert playing for CLM? What a shite-show.

No fricking way. However, that said, he would have better receivers this time around, and if CLM stayed out of the way, the offense would hum like a fricking 16 cylinder. However, I get the feeling that this coaching staff would find a way to frick it up, if for no other reason because of Bert being Caucasian.

Make no bones about it, though, in terms of raw talent Bert Jones was the best QB for LSU.

The thing that people need to remember was that Mac had several assistants who needed to be shown the door and Mac wouldn't do it. Those assistants did not do Mac any favors.

Paul Lyons had played QB in high school but was initially moved to defensive back at LSU. Butch Duhe's sudden death moved things up ahead of schedule. Buddy Lee started, and Bert (a sophomore) backed him up. When Bert got thrown into the Orange Bowl against Penn St, I doubt that he had really gotten many reps in practice, and the game really couldn't be hung on him. We could have won that sonofabitch if Mac and crew had done a better job of game planning. I know Mac was a neat guy and had his successes, but the game was passing him by. However, another bad streak of luck happened when Mike Miley decided to go pro in baseball after Spring practice. Otherwise, Mac and crew had installed the Veer offense just tailored for him in what would be his senior year. We wound up with Carl Otis Trimble (who couldn't pass) and Billy Broussard, who would have been alternating with Miley, and probably should have played exclusively instead of trying to force a two QB when there really wasn't a second QB. Pat Lyons (younger brother of Paul) would come in and alternate for awhile with Bobby Moreau, but they quickly figured out that Moreau wasn't college QB material and put him on defense where he was much more successful. Lyons finished his career on his own, although without that good of a supporting cast in terms of players AND coaching assistants. His career ended with an injury which led to the entry of to sophomore QBs - Emsminger and Woodley.

Pat Lyons had some decent talent around him. Terry Robiskie, Charles Alexander, Mike Quintella et al weren't that bad. We tied number 1 Nebraska 6-6 with Pat and these guys.
