Actually, I think it was clear from the get go that Alleva was hedging his bets. Whether that was an indication a coaching change was on the drawing board is another issue.

My recollection is that there were a few instances of programs being on the hook for assistant coaches when a head coach retired/moved on/was fired just prior to Joe trying to slip that clause into everyone's contracts. Seems I recal some talking head commenting on this probably being the new normal, more aimed at head coaches leaving for the NFL/higher prestige jobs than at firings.

But my memory is sometimes faulty.
