I think there is no one reason or cause for success or failure (W's and L's). There are always multiple factors. But, the buck has to stop somewhere. Someone ultimately has to be held responsible. Opinions vary on who that someone is.

Of course there are many factors with a team's success or failure. The vast majority of those factors (but not all - injuries, for example) fall squarely within the responsibilities of the head coach. So the buck stops with the head coach. Just as it stops with the CEO of a company. That's why they get paid the massive salaries. They're in charge. They're ultimately responsible.
