The committee (and the general public) will latch onto whatever argument they prefer in a given year. Typically the argument appears to be a rationalization to defend their favorite big name team - and will often outright contradict the sentiment of criteria from previous years.
If a bad loss would disqualify a team they don't prefer (Ok State 11) that will be the criteria, if it would rule out the team they prefer (USC 03) then that will be considered a fluke that shouldn't reasonably be considered.
If a conference championship criteria would rule out a team they don't want in the championship game (OU 03) then that will be touted as an objectively good criteria, if it would rule out a team judged better by the eye test (Bama 11 or 15 in the hypothetical) then it would be thrown out as irrelevant.
