Why does "Fighting Sioux" or "Sioux" need to be changed, but "Seminoles" is OK?

For starters there's no "Fighting" part in or name.

and this

The NCAA is ok with Indian tribe names if the local tribe is okay with it.
quote:

The Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Nation supports Central Michigan University's use of “Chippewas” as a nickname. The Ute tribe supports the University Utah using “Utes” as a nickname. And the Florida Seminoles endorse Osceola as Florida State's icon.

quote:

Real reason...Myles Brand was a communist idiot
Stated reason...offended everyone
Practical reason...To not get extorted and blackmailed by a money hungry segment of the tribe that cost UND millions.

quote:

basically this

Millions?? really

The Seminoles nor the Utes tribes profit directly from any agreement. We give full scholarships to students from the tribes, input into the native american symbolism we use and cultural awareness. We already did all that long before the NCAA came along.

The Tribes have about a population of 3,000 each. Then you have to factor in what percentage of the youth that want to attend FSU or Utah. I think we only had like a dozen graduate from FSU ever.

Also, how the hell is an aggie going to talk about extortion considering how german you guys are with the "12th man" stuff. I'm sure you're not bothering any Texas High Schools that use it.

Sammy Seminole I wonder if any old football fans remember him

Hes was replaced by Chief Osceola and Renegade in 1977
