The better precedent for Bama fans should be 2006 when Michigan and Ohio St were "clearly the two best teams" but after a close late season game, the BCS wisely spurned the rematch. Bc either USC or Florida were available, although Florida was expected to lose bad. But the eye test was invented in 2011 for one team only so Michigan had to sit down.
Exactly. I almost talked about 06 in my original response but it was late.
It's easy to forget given the dominance of the SEC that started with that UF win over OSU, but the SEC was not considered then the juggernaut it is considered now. An undefeated Auburn had just been left out two years earlier. Florida was a huge underdog in the BCSCG and I would argue that Michigan would have have had a smaller spread.
Michigan was #2 for six weeks before losing to #1 OSU, and after the loss they only fell one spot to #3, an even smaller drop than Bama's two spot drop in 2011, still ahead of #4 Florida.
But the following week, while Michigan sat at home, Florida went and beat #8 Arkansas to win the SEC, so the pollsters then rightfully jumped the Gators over Michigan to ensure that another conference would have their chance to "settle it on the field", even though many of those voters would have thought Michigan was better than Florida and had a better shot to beat OSU.
But it was the right thing to give another team and conference a chance.
While in 2011, #3 Oklahoma State beat #13 Oklahoma to win the Big 12 while Alabama was sitting at home SECCG weekend, and OSU made no movement in the polls, stayed stuck at #3 and even dropped on several coaches' ballots, including Saban's, to as low as #6.
It was a horrible and unethical manipulation of the system, and that was the only thing that allowed the injustice of the Rematch to play out.
It's so easy for the media and Bama fanbase to say well yeah but we won so obviously we deserved to be there, but that is complete horseshite.
Who is to say that Michigan wouldn't have beaten OSU if given the Rematch in 06?? Would that have made Florida somehow not as good or as deserving as we all saw they were??
The bottom line is all these media hacks always preach about "settling it on the field", and yet, in 2011 they refused to allow ALL of the best teams a chance to do so.

As soon as fans can accept there are different standards for different teams, your enjoyment of the sport will increase.
