Im sure it does penetrate more than a lot of the new hollow point handgun loads that expand very aggressively.
It's a trade off though. Just about anybody is going to have a tough time landing hits with a handgun. Buckshot coming out of the backside of a person is going to go through less wall than a 9mm personal defense bullet fresh out of the barrel.
There are endless variables to discuss here. IMO, if I've got to shoot a person at 5 yards in my house in the dark, I'll take my 12 gauge with 1 buck over any handgun that exists on this planet.
