No, no it's not. In many cases.
There are plenty stories, books, movies, video games, etc. where the backstory is hinted at but not explicitly spelled out. There is nothing wrong with leaving some things to the imagination.

It was pure laziness. Lucas has admitted in documentaries that he switched to CGI due to the difficulties of building multiple sets. Not only that but he thought it was going to become an industry standard after he revolutionized it with Phantom Menace.
