That bit was definitely a joke.

I do believe that when we eventually do find other life out there, it's going to have a LOT more in common with us (or, future us) than we expect. I'll explain why.

If you believe in the Fermi paradox (which makes a lot of sense to me) then we are either ahead of or behind the 'great filter' and most likely we are behind it. Simply because whatever ridiculously large percentage of intelligent beings are behind it, then we are most likely in that percentage. Unless you believe that the Kardashians are part of the infinitely small percentage of being ahead of the great filter... I choose not to believe that.

So, we are behind the filter... it's still in our future, and there are likely countless other worlds out there that are with us on this path. Subscribing to the thought that the simplest explanation is usually the best one, it would make sense that those other civilizations that are behind the filter are likely also carbon-based and located in their planets' Goldilocks Zone and are evolving just like life on Earth.

I'm not saying that they are walking around on two feet and listening to techno music, but they are most likely comprised of the same basic components of life that we have. I think the basic theories of evolution and biochemistry likely hold true across the universe and in particular to all the civilizations that are on our side of the filter.

They might be more advanced than us... although if we find them it's more likely that future us is more advanced than they are... but either way is possible. Maybe they have developed telepathic means of communication? I don't even think that's too far in the future in our own evolution. Or perhaps they have developed sentient robotics, again something that isn't too far-fetched. Or maybe they have evolved into something we can't comprehend yet, possible, but still most likely something that could be in our future, by the time we are able to travel to other inhabited worlds.

All that said, I, for one, welcome our new alien overlords.
