Agree that the NCAA is in a precarious position, but it's so passe to pile on. It's an awkward system but it's really for the best. People who want to change the eligibility rules could end up destroying college sports.

I know all these people say pay the athletes, etc., etc. The real issue is the value of wahat any athlete gets from college is possibly more valuble then what they could ever lose from the Univeersity selling their memorabilia, etc. It is a very rare athlete that the school makes more money on; than their actual cost to the program.
The majority of athletes get a degree, they leave school with no tuition debt, room, board, etc. They get the opportunity to go to college and to enjoy that experience, meet different people, places, etc. The average college student does not get the same benefit. I know it would be really hard to calculate, but most college athletes can return to their State/College town and rely on contacts and access to people who will in turn help them with jobs, career advice, grad school, etc. How can anyone say that they aren't benefitting from being in college. They benefit more than the average student.
Without college sports, the majority of these athletes would not have the same opportunities. Not even close. There are 32 NFL teams, each with 85 on a roster and the majority are veteran players. The real travesty is someone not explainging math to these kids that think the NFL, NBA, to some extent MLB, is a viable career option. It is like depending on winning the lottery for your retirement.
I don't feel sorry for any guy who if he never played another down of football, with the right life choices would be able to support his family and provide himself with a career.
