Forget their schmaltzy hits later on--anyone who hasn't heard their first three albums needs to do it. Amazing instrumentation and writing. A friend trained in jazz listened and said that he'd never heard such complex music in pop/rock.

If Terry Kath had never died (in 1978) they might have an even greater legacy. I like Peter Cetera (and his vocal sparring with Kath on the early albums is legendary) but the band became a ballady pop band afterward.
