It's meant to be open to interpretation, but I think the best arguments are clearly in favor of Tony being killed.

I think this guy has done some updates recently, but here is a link to a ridiculously thorough explanation.

Recently David Chase made the claim that Tony Soprano is still alive, but the context and tone in which he said that made the answer unconvincing to those of us who go along with the "Tony was assassinated" plot.
