I always read the word Zouave as "zo ah vay", or "zwah vay". I had never served in the military and I guess I had never heard it pronounced. That is, until I was ridiculed by a retired staff sergeant at a social event - old crusty bastard! "Are you trying to say 'Zouave' (zwahv)?"
