That 100 yards is neutral. The end zones are not. The end zone belongs to a team. When you put it in your opponent's end zone, the ball belongs to them. Best have possession of it if you do that so you can score points.

It is merciless, but that's why it's not so great. There are elements of chance in football, like any sport, and that's a good thing. But there shouldn't be an element of chance that turns the tables SO much. Losing possession is bad enough, but losing 20 yards of field position too? And the defense didn't even have to earn it?! It's a dumb rule. Not great at all.
