ETA: I agree with Danielson that officials tend to scrutinize the better teams with regards to throwing flags. I think a big part of it is also how aggressive a team plays, particularly on defense. Better, more athletic defenses tend to play with more attitude (think late hits, jumping offsides, etc.).

Also, to use Baylor as an example, teams that run HUNH obviously run more plays, which means they will inevitably have more penalties.

Championship teams may have to overcome mistakes to succeed.
If there's enough talent, this is possible.
But penalties always hurt your chances.

How does that correlate with Bama getting the fewest flags thrown, especially for offensive holding, in the whole league?
