Heading to Sherburne Saturday morning to do a little squirrel hunting and scouting for deer season. I'm not very familiar with the reserve, so any pointers would be appreciated. Got my flagging, compass, bug spray, etc. Got all my licenses so I'm good to go, I've just never gone hunting there alone, it was always with someone familiar with the area who would bring me to a spot and tell me where to go. I'll be coming in from the I-10 entrance. Should I just drive in, unload the bike and take off down a trail, then park it and walk around, and hope I stumble across a few squirrels and/or deer signs? Im excited to squirrel hunt for the first time in about 15 years.

Get there an hour earlier than you could ever possibly imagine anyone else would be there and walk 3x farther into sherburne than you think you should. That way, you'll probably only get peppered with shots from other squirrel hunters a half-dozen times.

Seriously, opening morning of squirrel season on Sherburne is a war zone. There will be a billion people out there hunting.

I've always found that hunting water ways in an unfamiliar place is the way to go. Find a creek and role. When your done with the squirrel hunt, do a little walking to deer. It's been mighty dry lately so you may find a few trails for early hunting
