I think the stadium would still be full for conference games, but in the time period you reference, the view from your living room, if you could even get one, was far worse than the view from any seat in the stadium. The opposite is true today.

In the early 70s, I remember going to some games with my dad and getting there a couple of hours ahead but no tailgating. Most people didn't wear purple and gold, just regular clothes. The customary thing was stop somewhere to eat on the way to the game.
