Tailgating, as it is done now at LSU, is a relatively new thing that developed about the time LSU stopped people from drinking in the stadium. There have always been a few who grilled or partied outside the stadium but not nearly to the degree they do now. When I went to school in the 70s I never heard the term "tailgating." Fans have been filling the stadium since Dietzel was coach. If they don't tailgate they'll do something else. They will pass a good time and go to the games.

I think the stadium would still be full for conference games, but in the time period you reference, the view from your living room, if you could even get one, was far worse than the view from any seat in the stadium. The opposite is true today.
