I have had a mule, a hawg, and a few assorted cheap ones. The cheap ones have shitty straps that dig into your shoulders, don't distribute the weight well at all, don't take advantage of storage space, the zippers suck, and the mouthpieces are crap. I think I still have one cheap one somewhere, but the hawg and mule are both 15+ years old and still in perfect shape. I used the mule for work for basically a year and a half straight, 5-6 days a week. Now, it is normally in my truck full of water instead of me bringing water bottles everywhere.
Bottom line, unless you plan on only using the thing a few times, you get what you pay for

I have an old Mule or Hawg that gave me many good years of service. I have a Motherlode I still use as a backpack, even though I've never used the hydration bladder. That's how much I like their packs.
