Actually, hybrid batteries are not toxic and can be disposed of in a regular landfill. But they are 70-100% recyclable and so hardly anything goes into a landfill.
I did the numbers when we bought my wife's new car a few years ago when gas was pushing $4. She commutes about 20 miles RT and a hybrid made no sense.
