spend $300 on a savage.. then spend the rest on a scope. Thank me later
That was kind of my thoughts going into this. What about that Ruger American 30-06... I see they are ~$350. Anyone have any reviews/comments on the Ruger American?

The Savage and the Ruger American are both good shooting rifles.
If it's still around, avoid the Remmington 770 combo from Academy.

All the things I've heard about the Ruger American are that it is a reliable and affordable rifle. If that's your criteria it will suit you just fine.

I personally hate the hollow sounding and plastic feel of the stock, but it doesn't hinder performance.

Best advice I can give is don't cheap out on a scope or its mounts. That's not to say you need to drop $2500 on a Swarovski but I'd avoid a Tasco or Simmons

ruger american would be fine for $350 range. I like those and savages. put a decent scope on it, and you will be set.
