One of the all-time great genre directors, and a true advocate for the genre. He was one of the few directors who argued that horror was a legit genre capable of true art.

Also, to irritate a certain segment of this board, he always argued that films should advocate a viewpoint and that social commentary was a necessary part of horror (it also is how one could smuggle politics into film under the disrespected genre label).

He was a generous man and a sharp thinker. He cared deeply about the medium and though he hadn't made a film in some time, he will be missed. I'm going to watch Shocker this evening in his honor.
