Would have thought he was part of the news crew and just dicking around with a prop. I probably would've thought he was carelessly handling a firearm, and said "Hey dude, you really shouldn't point that thing at people."

Yeah, I can see me now shooting someone holding a toy weapon because I didn't realize it was part of the news piece.
By the time you know different, they are both likely dead already.
It's part of what makes a police officer's job harder for sure.
