Pelini was good for 2.5 seasons. Midway thru 2007 his defense just collapsed. He seemed incapable of slowing down a spread team.

Crowton was a great hire. His offense carried the team in 2007. He wore out his welcome but the hire was worth it for 2007.

And I won't diminish Chavis. His defenses were solid 2011 was the best in the country and one of the best in college football history. 2013 was his only bad defense. His defenses carried the team every year but 2013. He didn't recruit much but that was known about him from the start.

It was also a liability that LSU no longer has to carry despite the fact that he did a good job as DC here.

But Pelini still has 3 straight Top 3 ranked defenses nationally. And the 2011 seaon was still a national championship season where his defense did it's part in the dismantling of Ohio St. I remember how everyone thought Ohio St. had just as much speed as LSU then but our defense rattled and pressured that offense. The score was 31-10 with 1:40 left in the 4th.
