I wouldn't doubt that Sexton kept some irons in the fire for Saban, but to think Saban had already checked on LSU at least a year in advance is pretty farfetched.

A good agent is always doing groundwork for his best clients. Plus, Saban moving again and again must mean better paydays for Sexton.
I would not be surprised if Saban had multiple chances to leave LSU during his time here. Who knows who many contract extensions or raises happened due to this.

How is the 2004 season at least a year from when he left? It's under 6 months.
