Where will the 2015 LSU defense rank in the Miles Era?

I don't think Miles has ever had such slim depth at defensive line going into a season for sure.

LB and the secondary appear to be solid, but historically speaking, below average.

On paper, it seems to me that the the overall defense projects to be at or near the bottom of the Les Miles era.

If you disagree, I would be curious to hear which of his previous defenses the 2015 unit projects to be better than.

Last year. We pretty much only rotated 5-6 last year.

2013, 2008 for sure. But that's just off the top of my head.

2015 will be MUCH better than 2013. That defense was simply lost out there.

Definitely more experience and depth than 2013. Next year is not the problem, 2016 is when it'll bite us. O will be experienced and full of Jrs and Srs, D will be allot of Fr/Sos

But this is the same DL unit as last year, minus two NFL players and a suspension.

You're right man. Players typically tend not to improve during the offseason. How foolish of us.

Who are you expecting significant improvement from specifically?

I've heard Herron is not looking any better so far this summer, at least not in terms of his physical fitness.

? Every single defensive lineman we have is young (with the exception of QT) Why shouldn't we expect them to improve?

Improvement is one thing, but some these guys need to make leaps to turn the DL unit around. I'm just not sure which of these guys are capable of that. That's why I was asking if there was anyone in particular that you expect big things from.

Again, I'm not saying the DL will be terrible, only that it is the thinnest group Miles has ever had on paper going into an LSU season.

Run Defense
The guys that helped LSU bring their last 6 regular season opponents to their lowest or second lowest rushing totals of the season, are back.

Pass Defense
The 3 best players of the secondary that were first in the SEC and 3rd in college football return.

We bring back 2 of our 3 starting LBs, and we lose nothing in pass rush from the prior DEs.

Usually a coach won't try to drastically change a defense from what was already working in year one. I'm expecting improved pass rush, the same 2nd half regular season rush defense, and the same LSU secondary with more turnovers because of better playmakers.

So I'm expecting a top level Miles defense.

Coach Bebe is a HUGE step up in coaching for our defensive line. And you can expect much better pass rushing with a defensive mind who doesn't mind blitzing in Steele

So which previous Miles defenses do you expect the 2015 unit to be better than?

the talent is there at LB. Losing Kwon sucks but Beckwith was a monster last year. I expect him to be among the best LSU MLB in my lifetime

Since I am 25 that is not saying a whole lot.

Kendell Beckwith > Bradie James?

Thanks for specifying. I think this is more of a optimistic best case type scenario than an objective projection, but I could easily see this.

There was really nothing special about the '13 and '14 defenses. The defense in 2013 was abused in several high-profile games and the '14 defenses benefitted greatly from an offensive ideology focused on ramming the ball down opponents throats and shortening the game as much as possible.

Only one that I'd consider a stretch is 2009, which was really only a cut above the others due to its redzone defense.

He was impressive as hell last year. I thought I had a man crush on Kwon but Beckwith won me over.

I expect big things out of him this year. Sucks he has such a young d Line in front of him.
