Was not there, as I'm 48. My dad was, and I've talked to him several times about your specific request - a description of the mood - but I've generally asked more about the season, not the game. For those of Yall that were there (specifically Lsu students at the time), I'd be curious to hear if your memory was the same as my dads, which is this.
Many old timers repeat stories, and I've heard about the 1959 season probably 10 times. My dad graduated high school in 57, went to La Tech fall 57/spring 58, then transferred to LSU. There's one thing that stands out - that gets repeated EVERY TIME dad tells this tale, and surprisingly, it's not about what happened Halloween night. It's what happened the next week when they lost to Tennessee. Pretty sure it was the very next week anyway. Dad talks of how the LSU campus felt like an absolute morgue that Monday after losing to Tennessee. Apparently, there was some type of long Tennessee run (may have been an interception return), but the radio announcer (assuming Politz) was saying over and over "and Cannon is on the ground! Cannon is on the ground!
Considering how great that Cannon run was, and that my dads memory goes straight too the next weeks mood, almost feels like dads memory is the birth of negatigerism.

My brother was a recruit for that game on the team sideline. He has told me many times what it was like and the thing that stood out to me is he said the locker room was crazy and when Dietzel got in there he quieted them down and said remember Tennessee next week. And Cannon scored then also.

Not often used, as excuses were not common back in the day for bad (or unfortunate) referee calls. However, until about 4-5 yrs ago, I had a newspaper clipping saved from the following week's loss to TN. In that Knoxville ?? paper photo, cannon was digging for the goal line (2-pt conversion) with the ball tightly nestled in his left armpit 1/3 across the stripe. The photo had a caption, but can't remember...has anyone ever seen the photo I describe?
