The Braves have agreed to sign 16-year-old Dominican shortstop Derian Cruz, the No. 5 international prospect for July 2, for $2 million.

Cruz is an explosive athlete with plus-plus speed, with scouts projecting him to be an 80 runner as he gets stronger. He’s 6 feet, 165 pounds and will need to refine some things at the plate but he’s a switch-hitter who has shown solid contact skills. Cruz trains with Javier Rodriguez and Rudy Santin and has played in the International Prospect League.

Dominican outfielder Christian Pache, the No. 21 international prospect for July 2, has agreed to sign with the Braves.

Pache, 16, is 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, drawing praise for his athleticism and potential to stick in center field. Those highest on Pache liked his righthanded bat despite some funkiness to his swing, with a strong showing at MLB’s international showcase in February helping his stock. Pache trained with Valentin Monero.

Peraza, Albies, Smith, Cruz... I like the direction the Braves are going as far as building for the future. Strong pitching, scrappy hitting, and speed.

Now is when you review the draft. You have to couple the draft with July 2nd. Teams have handshake agreements in place with a bunch of international prospects. Cruz would have been a first round pick if eligible. They are stocking the system well. I am a fan of what Hart and Cop are doing. Huge fan. This ain't a scene, it's a god damn arms race.

I certainly am not an expert at scouting etc, but it seems that the philosophy of Hart is that he is setting up for the new stadium to host more than regular season games and a wild card game or two.
