At the time, prisons were looking for a different means of execution as hanging was considered midieval. They were offering contracts to anyone who could come up with a better solution. Edison basically "auditioned" using DC on an electric chair and fried the frick out of the poor guy in a live test in an epic fail..the public basically hated Edison and JP Morgan for it.

IIRC, right before this was when Tesla and westinghouse were awarded the Niagra falls energy contract using their AC current beating out Edison/JP Morgan (DC)
